Norton Utilities 2002
Posted Thursday, September 07, 2006 10:26:36 AM by BlogJeeves Team
Cars don't clean themselves, and neither do hard drives. Norton Utilities 2002 helps users keep their computers uncluttered and running smoothly with only a small investment of time and energy. Utilities quickly and easily finds and repairs computer problems, and is scalable to the user's level of expertise. It takes a bit of time to install and run Norton Utilities the first time, especially if the machine has been used for any length of time without maintenance. Still, the manual and help functions are clear, and most users will have it running invisibly in an afternoon or evening (novices should definitely ask for the aid of an experienced user). The program requires a bit of additional attention every week or so, as it discovers new problems and prompts for authorization to repair them, but most of its work is unnoticeable. Repairing damaged files, defragmenting crowded drives, and monitoring system performance are the most widely useful utilities, but some users will particularly appreciate tools like WipeInfo and the Registry Tracker. One of Norton's great strengths is its scalability, which depends on the user's level of expertise. Old hands can fiddle around under the hood to their heart's content, while novices can just start it up and watch it go. If you own a previous version of Norton Utilities, you'll want to upgrade to the 2002 version if you're running Windows XP; other Windows users can get along just fine waiting for more new features. For new users, Norton Utilities is a great way to keep your computer happy, safe, and sound. --Rob Lightner...

Norton Antivirus 2002 Professional

While Norton has become synonymous with security and protection, it doesn't presume that the average user knows much about virus protection. Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional offers a perfect combination of instruction, guidance, and, of course, dependable protection against whatever may be threatening your business's computers. Moreover, the user interface offers a simple and straightforward way to immediately see the last time you updated your software, if any new threats have been discovered, and what options you may adjust. Compared to other packages, Norton AntiVirus excels by not trying to be everything to everyone. After a quick install and restart, it presents you with a comprehensive to-do list. You can scan for viruses, update your virus info, and register your package all in one easy step. Your Palm OS handheld is also protected from potential threats that can infect it while syncing or beaming. Norton AntiVirus gets installed on your first sync after your desktop install, and is managed through it's own icon on the Palm home screen. Norton AntiVirus automatically handles known and unknown viruses, suspicious scripts, and other threats, and provides constant protection through Auto-Protect (which loads into memory when you start your computer or handheld). The package largely handles its set tasks in the background, and doesn't suck up tons of memory or demand your constant attention. The ability to scan for viruses while still going about your business is a true blessing. (When we scanned for viruses and threats the first time, Norton scanned over 120,000 files in about 75 minutes. Much of this time we spent working on other tasks, checking in with Norton now and then.) To optimize system performance, you may tinker with a few options to alter how controlled scans will be and what areas Norton AntiVirus will look at. We favored the Schedule function, allowing for an automatic scan at the interval of our choice (we selected a time during a weekly meeting). Other options control the handling of infected files: you may opt to have Norton AntiVirus save a copy before attempting a repair, scan system files on startup (for Windows 98 users), or alert you if your virus protection software is out-of-date. Other features available are the UnErase wizard (to recover files and data from the Recycle Bin) and Wipe Info (to completely remove sensitive data from your computer). The neatest feature of Norton AntiVirus 2002 is its new integration with Windows Explorer, which lets you launch Norton from the Explorer pane with one simple click. This, and other timesaving, easily accessible shortcuts, makes Norton AntiVirus 2002 Professional a smart decision for any serious businessperson. --Emilie Herbst...

Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2003 Professional Edition protects you and your business from online threats. This powerful suite keeps your PC safe from viruses and hackers with full versions of Norton AntiVirus Professional Edition and Norton Personal Firewall. You also get advanced utilities to safeguard your privacy and let you use the Internet more efficiently. Norton Internet Security's 24-hour protection provides vital Internet security for dialup, DSL, and cable modem users. Ad blocking now stops even more banner ads, pop-up windows, pop-under windows, and other Web distractions. The new Web Cleanup feature deletes unneeded files left over from Internet sessions, while Connection Keep Alive helps prevent dialup Internet sessions from being interrupted. Norton AntiVirus 2003 scans and cleans both incoming and outgoing e-mail, stopping viruses from infecting your computer or spreading to other computers. It removes viruses automatically, without interrupting your work. To prevent infections during real-time online chats, Norton AntiVirus now also detects viruses in instant-message attachments, including attachments you receive using MSN, Windows, AOL, and Yahoo! messaging services. Norton Personal Firewall 2003 keeps hackers out and personal data in. Its robust defenses include intrusion detection, application control, and privacy protection--all in one easy-to-use program. Right out of the box, Norton Personal Firewall hides your PC on the Internet to keep hackers from seeing it. That action alone can prevent many attacks. In addition, Symantec's exclusive Norton Intrusion Detection feature thoroughly examines incoming Internet traffic and automatically blocks suspicious activities. Hackers also try to conduct malicious activity from within your PC, so Norton's Internet Access Control is included to stop spyware and Trojan horse programs masquerading as legitimate Internet applications on your PC from connecting to the Internet. Norton Privacy Control prevents confidential information from being sent out without your knowledge, while Norton Spam Alert helps you keep junk mail out of your inbox by checking e-mail coming in via popular POP3 clients such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, and Netscape Messenger....
