ColdFusion Studio 4.5
Posted Monday, September 11, 2006 8:26:40 AM by BlogJeeves Team
ColdFusion uses a tag-based server scripting language, ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML), which is ideal for programming Web applications. Processed entirely on the server, CFML tags cleanly integrate with HTML for user interface and XML for data exchange. Both open and extendable, CFML supports more than 70 server-side tags, 200 functions, and 800 third-party components, making it the most productive environment available for creating advanced Web applications. ColdFusion Server is the deployment foundation of the ColdFusion Web application server. ColdFusion Studio is the visual tool component of the ColdFusion Web application server. It's designed to work with ColdFusion Server (licensed separately) for both remote development and application deployment. ColdFusion Studio comes with the single-user version of the server for testing and development at an individual workstation. ...

CONTRIBUTE COMMERCIAL NORTH

Macromedia Contribute is an easy-to-use Web page editor designed for nontechnical users. The software is not intended to be a standalone product, so it's not for individuals looking for a Web editor. The assumption behind Contribute is that larger Web sites have designers, programmers, and administrators who make things work well and look good, while others provide the content. This product is for those others. For the end user, Contribute is delightfully simple. It works like a Web browser, but with Edit Page and New Page buttons. Once in edit mode, you can use it like a word processor, with good control over formatting and the ability to add images and tables. You can also insert Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and Flash movies. Once you are done, you can choose between publishing to the Web and saving changes for later. The program keeps copies of old versions, so you can backtrack if necessary. Web site administrators will find Contribute thoughtfully designed. The administration tools give you fine control over what users can do and which pages they can edit. The basic settings let you protect scripts and forms, or restrict editing to just text and formatting. More advanced options are possible using Dreamweaver MX templates, which allow you to create editable and noneditable regions. Word and Excel documents are sensibly filtered before insertion, to strip out unnecessary HTML. Before committing to Contribute, you should review its limitations. Users have no access to HTML source and, in general, the editing features are deliberately restricted. It is also designed for static content only, and isn't suitable for sites that store content in a database or content management system. This is a fine product and a great concept, but for some Web sites it will be just a bit too restrictive. --Tim Anderson, Amazon.co.uk...

Macromedia Flash 4 for Mac
Posted Sunday, September 03, 2006 12:26:42 PM by BlogJeeves Team
Macromedia's Flash is one of those rare tools that was a whole new technology when it emerged, but has evolved into something indispensable. Now up to version 4, animators and designers using Flash have more options and controls than ever for creating rich, interactive content for the Web. The beauty of Flash is the compact size of a Flash file. It downloads quickly and is resolution independent, meaning it can scale to fit any screen and always look sharp, resulting in visually large, high-impact graphics with little overhead. Although Macromedia calls Flash files "movies", they are not movies in the traditional sense. While they do play back with synchronized sound at a specified framerate, the similarity ends there. Flash files can contain interactive elements, they can be queued to a specific point or played back to another, they can be used as much to gather information or for whole Web page design and navigation as much as for creating playback-only cartoons with no interactivity. The most important new feature in Flash 4 is, arguably, the ability to create MP3 streaming audio. The MP3 format has quickly become the compression method of choice for internet audio, and Flash can now import and export to this high-quality, heavily compressed format, allowing for any animation to have a rich soundtrack without the burden of larger file sizes. Editable text fields in Flash 4 now allow the creation of things like username/password windows, survey input forms, order forms, etc. This data can be gathered in Flash and exported as a text file for import into another application. Macromedia has improved the interface by adding some palettes and strengthening others. Object and Transform palettes ("inspectors") allow one to edit spatial properties of an element, while the improved Library window is now better able to handle large projects, many elements, and supports nested folders for organizing elements. The dynamic landscape of the Web puts great demands on Web developers and the tools they use. Macromedia Flash 4 is an important and robust upgrade, and Flash 4 is a must-have for anyone creating more than simple, text-based HTML-Web pages. --Mike Caputo...

Macromedia FreeHand 8 for Windows

Freehand 8, Macromedia's drawing application, features new tools for both the print and Web-based artist. Version 8.0.1 offers new creative tools not available in other vector-graphics applications, such as lens fills (for creating transparency effects, including light, dark, and grayscale areas) and a graphic hose (for "spraying" a sequence of images across the surface of a document). Two exciting and unique new features are the "freeform" and "reshaping" tools. These are used for editing, bending, and altering paths without using Bezier handles (but you can still reshape things with the handles if desired). Toolbars and keyboard shortcuts are now completely customizable. For the user, this means that it's now easier to switch between other applications. This change was made by eliminating the need to learn different sets of shortcuts and by placing often-used tools in a custom toolbar. Freehand 8 now has the ability to export a layered document as a native Flash file (a .swf file), allowing a designer to create an entire layout in Freehand and import it into Flash--fully ready for animation. Additionally, one can use the "blend" tool to convert a series of blends to layers for export to Flash. Vector-based graphics have long been used for print due to their resolution independence, and they are ideal for use on the Web, thanks to their small file size. Freehand 8's integration with Flash makes it a powerful asset for any print and Web graphics designer striving for consistency between media types. --Mike Caputo...
